Some of the natural tick products and recommendations out there are nothing short of alarming. Companies and individuals aren’t doing their homework before selling or recommending products containing natural ingredients that can harm or even kill some animals. Many assume if they’re safe for humans they must be safe for animals. Others research the functionality of the ingredient without considering their safety for pets.
Further confusing the issue are the variables involved. Some herbs or essential oils may be safe for one species and not the other, for example. Not only does that apply to using the item on one pet, but it also must be considered for all pets residing in the household. Using an essential oil on your dog because it’s safe for him, may send your cat into convulsions and kill your bird. If that’s not bad enough, some natural items may be safe for larger dogs, but not for smaller breeds, while others may be safe if heavily diluted but not full strength, and so on.

Interesting…I never have heard this about tea tree oil. I have a shampoo for our dogs that contains tea tree oil meant for hot spot treatment – would you think this is potentially harmful as well? It’s scary to think that these big companies would actually NOT do research?
It depends on how much tea tree oil is in there and the dog it’s being used on. It’s heavily diluted in most products to a point where it does little good or bad.

Why is Cedar oil harmful?
Cedar contains volatile compounds that have been linked to skin and eye irritation, allergies, and may interfere with liver function. Cats and other small animals seem to be especially sensitive to it. Cedar leaves and branches contain a very high level of the toxic chemical, thujone. There are some cedar products that claim they don’t contain the more toxic compounds, such as phenols, but it’s those compounds that make cedar toxic to insects and parasites so their effectiveness would be in question.
Well done! So many people repeat BS until everyone thinks its true and it usually starts with some company trying to sell something. People shouldn’t mess with natural medicine unless they know how to correctly research something!
