Petco’s recall of stainless steel bowls has demonstrated just how easily our pets (and humans) can be exposed to radioactive materials, heavy metals, chemicals and other contaminants without our being aware of it. Many of these contaminants can remain in the body and build up with repeated exposure, leading to future health issues. Others may pose more immediate danger, such as mycotoxins.
While it’s intended to provide perspective, I’m not at all comforted by radiation exposure comparisons to x-rays or other frequent exposure. The fact that an x-ray can cause miscarriage, defects, brain damage or leukemia during pregnancy tells us that it isn’t as harmless as it sounds.
The constant, unknown danger is why our family first explored natural methods of reducing the risk associated with contamination. We don’t believe in harsh “cleansing” routines, but prefer to incorporate simple practices to protect our bodies from all kinds of contaminants by facilitating efficient, natural elimination. We don’t do anything radical or buy into whatever we read on the Internet, but instead opt for scientifically proven properties that are found in some foods and natural supplements. All of this knowledge and positive results have naturally extended to our pets, from furry to fish.
Following is a list of some of the most gentle and simple foods and neutraceuticals that may prevent, offset or eliminate radiation contamination. All of them offer additional benefits, from medicinal properties to general health, and are safe for regular use.
- Seaweed (Natural iodine from iodide ions, plus conversion for elimination)
- Aloe (absorbs free radicals)
- Apples (Pectin)
- Oranges (Potassium & Vitamin C)
- Buckwheat (Rutin)
- Calcium Montmorillonite Clay – Removes a full spectrum of toxins, including radiation, through adsorption and absorption. It is so effective at dealing with radiation it is frequently used in nuclear disasters for environmental treatment, and both internally and externally by victims of radiation exposure. Virtually all animals seek out healing clays in the wild so you’re quite safe with Calcium Montmorillonite Clay for any species. Purchase human edible-grade clay from a supplier who provides purity information (such as the product certification number) to avoid impurities and for full effectiveness.
Of course, not all of the above choices are suitable for all species. For example, your cat won’t benefit from fruit, but she can digest a bit of low-carbohydrate seaweed just fine. Remember that animals are much smaller than humans and their systems work differently, so a pinch of these items can go a long way. Discuss all dietary changes with your veterinarian.

I can’t believe the difference in my highly allergic dog since I started giving him montmorillonite every day. I don’t know how exactly it works but I know it does and that’s all I care about. I’m so grateful.
You’re totally the most educated person about natural pet topics online…..or at least the most interesting!! 😉
I love how you dig around for unique applications like a dog after a bone and the details are so useful.
Thank for sharing another great method of pet care.
I breathed a sigh of relief when I read this through. When I clicked I was afraid but after reading I see I’m already protected since I got clay from this site many months ago. FEW!!!!!!!
It’s crazy what we’re exposed to and think nothing of it. I don’t know if it’s all that scary but that’s the point, I don’t know. Until I DO know I’ll use protection like clay.
It scares me too!! Its amazing how much risk the government is willing to expose us to and unacceptable that we need to defend ourselves from their hidden threats like radiation.
Thank you for this information. We live near the San Onofre nuclear reactor, which they are probably going to reactivate in spite of radiation leaks, so I am glad to know about the clay. I will help spread the word, for people and animals.
Nuclear energy scares me. The impact of a disaster is next to impossible to contain or control, and the effects are so long-term that it’s quite overwhelming to contemplate. Fukushima’s disaster is still showing up in the food chain here on the West Coast. “Safe levels” are based upon a single instance of exposure but when it’s in the food chain and the environment, we can be exposed to a much higher degree over time.
Clay and seaweed brings me comfort and I sneak it into several meals each week. They have no idea Mom is protecting them, while also nurturing their digestive system and providing a natural supplement. Ssssshhhh… 😉
It’s like insurance, but a million times better. Clay has done wonders for my senior dog and when things like this happen I don’t have to worry as much. Cheers for promoting it!
Maybe nothing can protect us us entirely but we have to try to manage toxins at least. Clay has been used as medicine since the beginning of time and I’m sure we’d know by now if it didn’t work. My own family has been using clay since my great grandmother was alive, a native indian who had remedies past down through her family.
I hate this!Companies have the responsibilities to do this.
Ordered my 4th bag today and couldn’t be happier with the product and service. There really is a bounty of health in nature.
My whole family eats clay too. There are too many chemicals in the world nowadays and it doesn’t hurt to clean up after them. I’m going to try the other suggestions too.
It is upsetting and scary, I agree. I do believe companies are much more aware of their responsibilities than they used to be. Recalls happen in business, but every effort should be made to prevent them.
I hate to think of what happened before voluntary recalls were common. It’s unforgivable!
We already give your seaweed and clay to our pets and it does provide some comfort when recalls are announced but I wish companies would care more about pets. It leaves retailers and pet owners scrambling.
I was VERY upset when I read about this. Here I thought stainless was the best and safest. We don’t have bowls from that “batch” but how can we know for sure this was the only bad one? So frustrating and nowhere to hide from this mess.
It’s ridiculous and I do blame petco for not watching their suppliers better!!!
It comes at us from all sides. Food, toys, bowls and God knows what else is killing us. All we can do is stay on the defensive.
I feel a little less helpless when I can give my family and pets constant protection like this.
