We recently published a letter from a customer in which he mentioned his wife making ‘chews’ for his horses. We asked her for the recipe and she graciously sent it to us for publication. She combines a few old tricks for racehorses into one healthy treat.

2 cups plain applesauce
1 cup oatmeal
1/2 cup whole wheat flour
1/4 cup mixed seaweed flakes
1/2 teaspoon FRESH ginger
1/4 cup grated raw coconut (not the stuff in bags)
1/4 cup grated raw pumpkin
Preheat oven 350F.
Grease a 9×9 pan with vegetable oil.
Pour mix in and bake for about 30 minutes.
Cut into treat size when they first come out of the oven.
Refrigerate or freeze.
Thanks for sharing this wonderful horse treat recipe with us, Mrs. Chan!

Our mare and colt loved these treats every bit as much as they like apples and they’re even better for them. Thanks to the chans!
We eat seaweed regularly but I’ve never tried it on the animals. Thanks for te idea & recipe.
I’m going to try this tried & true recipe ASAP.
Oh WOW were they a hit! I had my doubts but our horse and pony both gobbled them right up. I’m so happy to give them health treats designed by racing royalty *curtsies* .
The old recipes are the best, thanks for sharing this.
Oh yum! I’ll have to make a batch of these for Kash & Penny. They sound great!
I make squares something like this (with sweet potatoes) and mix them up right in the pan. The horse and goats go wild for them.
We’ve been giving seaweed to our horses for generations too….maybe it’s a coastal thing?
Fantastic recipe Mrs. Chan!!! I’m going to make it for my horses this weekend
